Neosho – The Crowder Quill art and literary magazine announces a collaboration with the Theatre Department for the 2021 contest. This year, the Quill encourages entries focused on the theme of current events, social issues, and the pandemic.
Themed entries may be in any of the categories of writing, photography, or art. In addition to the usual placement in the magazine, the Theatre Department will select entries to be performed on stage in April called “Stories from Quarantine.” The author may opt to participate in the performance. Art and photography will be chosen for a multimedia presentation during the performance as well.
“Our hope is to provide a space to express and celebrate our community’s creativity, during this unique time,” said Tasha Davies, Theatre Department Head.
Entries may depict “stories of quarantine” experiences in various forms, including short stories, poems, song lyrics, and play scripts.
Entries may also be loosely tied to the theme of the impact of current events. For example, a photograph of a landscape may include the photographer’s note that nature provides a solace from the stress of current circumstances as well as an opportunity to “social distance.” A more direct entry might be a painting that includes face masks.
“We’re looking forward to a variety of entries for the Quill that capture the theme in creative ways,” said Latonia Bailey, Quill Adviser. “This is the first time a partnership has occurred between the two departments; any time departments collaborate, it’s a better outcome for everyone.”
Crowder students as well as area high school students and community members compete for awards and publication in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography, digital, 2D and 3D art.
The categories of 2D traditional media (paintings, drawings and hand-made prints) and 3D art (pottery, ceramic, sculptures) may be sent by mail or hand delivery by Feb. 1. All other entries should be sent as digital files and uploaded online at www.CrowderQuill.com by Feb. 1.

Individuals may submit up to four entries in each category, and specific guidelines for each category and more information can be obtained from the website.
Winning entrants will be notified by mid-March. The theatre performance will be April 23-24. Winning entrants will receive an award and will be published in the magazine in May. High school gold winners will also be offered scholarships subject to enrolling in specific, related courses.
The Quill has been published since 1980 and is distributed free on campus and in the community. The purpose of the Crowder Quill is to showcase and encourage artistic and literary works.
