RE: Adult Education & Literacy volunteer tutors needed

Neosho, MO – Crowder College Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) is seeking volunteer tutors for Adult Education and Literacy classes in Aurora, Monett, and Mount Vernon.   The Crowder College AEL program believes that a difference can be made in our communities with your assistance.

Educating adults creates stronger communities. Low-skilled adults are:
• 2x more likely to be unemployed;
• 3x more likely to be in poverty;
• 4x more likely to be in poor health; and
• 8x more likely to be incarcerated.

CCAEL classes provide instruction for high school equivalency (HSE) test preparation, basic skills review, college and career transitions, and other needed services such as ASVAB test preparation. Students must be 17 or older to attend. The classes have a wide variety of ages.

CCAEL is dedicated to serving each adult that needs educational support. Given this, we are asking for volunteer tutors to come alongside Aurora, Mount Vernon, and Monett AEL Instructors. CCAEL needs individuals to tutor one-to-one with students that have tested with low-literacy levels.  Basic reading and writing skills are lacking in such a number of students that the time and attention required are more than the classroom teacher can complete alone.

CCAEL has several resources for tutors to use while assisting. The primary curriculum used is the Laubach Way to Reading series. This series comes with excellent tutor guides. CCAEL can provide supplemental training as well. There are other materials that may be used but this series makes for an easy start with one-to-one teaching. Each volunteer is not required to attend both days of class for the duration. They are welcome to do that, however, we will schedule tutors for 1-2 hours a week if this is the amount of time they can donate. All that is needed is a simple background check provided by Crowder College.

Class Times and Locations:

Aurora Classes:

Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. In the old armory, 409 W. Locust Street, Aurora, MO

Mount Vernon Classes: Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the MARC at 822 W. Mount Vernon Blvd.

Monett Classes: Monday and Wednesday Evenings 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Life 360 Resource Center at 801 North Lincoln Avenue.

Making a difference in adult lives is a rewarding experience. Please lend a hand and volunteer.
