Crowder College administrators met Tuesday, September 6, to discuss ways of supporting victims of Hurricane Katrina in the Delta Region. The College has announced the following measures for support.
Crowder College is offering relief to survivors of Hurricane Katrina by:
Crowder’s Campus Life Office is designating Thursday, September 15 as a community concert and carnival day in an effort to raise funds and relief supplies for hurricane victims. Tentative plans are for the day to include raffles, trail rides, food booths, boot drives, inflatable jump machines, and more. The evening concludes with a concert by Heidi Schwartz. Schwartz, a Nashville singer/songwriter has found her niche in the world of seasoned pop, with her powerful vocals and guitar work. She has recently released her new CD. Throughout the day, individuals will be able to donate at the designated drop sites for clothing, diapers, and water. For more information on the September 15 fundraiser, contact Christy Smith, 417-455-5644.
Crowder College is developing formal plans for Crowder Project Relief (C.P.R.). This initiative will be lead by Dean of Student Services Sonya Pearson. Dean Pearson and other staff members are meeting to determine what actions the College can take to ready itself for participation in national and state efforts to provide relief for and to re-locate both students and individuals or families from the delta area who have lost their schools, homes, or businesses.
Members of the Crowder College Latino Union (CCLU), mobilized quickly to meet the needs of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Students passed out flyers reminding Monett Wal-Mart patrons of the severe drinking water shortage on Saturday, September 3. CCLU members collected over 415 cases of water to be delivered to critical areas.
The cases of water were delivered to a staging site in Joplin, where they were loaded onto an 18-wheeler trailer that was departing on Monday for the hurricane ravaged region.
Members who participated in the water drive include, José Lopez, Liliana Lopez, Fernando Rivera, all from Verona, Cristobal Villa, Ana Mejia, Sonia Romero, Vanessa Salas, Diana Duran and Oscar Garcia, from Monett.
The CCLU is a social/service organization that participates in many volunteer efforts at Crowder College and the surrounding community. They were also one of the first to volunteer after the Pierce City tornado, assisting downtown Pierce City business owners clean-up after the devastation left by the storm.
The Crowder College Latino Union would like to thank Monett Wal-Mart for hosting them and all the generous Wal-Mart shoppers who donated.
